Instinctual subtypes are the traditional approach to using the instincts that starts with type then uses instinct to create three subtypes (e.g., sp 1, sx 1, and so 1). Instinct is not used on its own but used only to discern three variations of a type.
Instinctual stacking is the more recent approach to using the instincts that starts with instinctual preference then may or may not apply that to type (e.g., sp/sx on it's own or sp/sx 1, sp/sx 2, etc.).
